Bike Maintenance: How To Install A Bicycle Chain?

The chain is a critical component of a bicycle drivetrain. Riding tension will increase the distance between the chains, accelerate the wear of the flywheel and chainring, make abnormal noises, and even break the chain in severe cases, causing personal injury.
In order to avoid this situation, today I will share with you how to judge whether the chain needs to be replaced, and how to quickly replace the bicycle with a new chain.
All modern chains have a rivet every half inch, and you can measure it with a standard ruler, 12 inches from one rivet to the other. Before starting to measure the chain. Align the zero mark of the scale with the center of the rivet and look at the position of the 12-inch mark on the scale.
If it is the center of another rivet, the chain is working well. If the rivet is less than 1/16″ of the marked line, the chain is worn but still usable. If the rivet is more than 1/16″ of the marked line, you will need to replace the chain at this point.
How to replace a new chain?
1. Determine the chain length
According to the number of Dental plate, bicycle chains can be divided into three types: single chainring, double chainring, and three chainrings (single-speed bicycles are not within the scope), so the method of judging the chain length is also different. First, we need to determine the length of the chain. The chain doesn’t go through the rear dial, it goes through the largest chainring and the largest cassette to make a full circle, leaving 4 chains behind. After the chain is pulled back, a complete circle is formed through the largest sprocket and the smallest flywheel. The straight line formed by the tensioner and guide wheel intersects the ground, and the angle formed is less than or equal to 90 degrees. Such a chain length is the best chain length. The chain doesn’t go through the rear dial, it goes through the largest chainring and the largest freewheel, making a complete circle, leaving 2 chains behind.
2. Determine the front and back of the chain
Some chains can be divided into front and back, such as Shimano 570067007900 and mountain hg94 (new 10s chain). In general, the side with the font facing out is the correct way to mount it.
The chamfers on the front and back of the bicycle chain are different. If the front and back are installed incorrectly, the chain will break in a short time.
When we install the chain, should the direction of the inner and outer guide plates be left or right? The correct installation direction will make your chain stronger, and it will not break easily when you step on it.
The correct way is to have the inner guide on the left and the outer guide on the right. When connecting the chain, the link is at the bottom.
