No matter how much regular maintenance you do on your mountain bike, it’s almost inevitable that you’ll experience some form of mechanical failure while riding the bike. But having the right knowledge means you can quickly and easily continue riding without the long trek home.
First:
Remove the rear wheel on a mountain bike: Move the gears so the chain is on the front middle chainring and the smallest rear gear sprocket. Release the rear brake and turn the bike upside down. Release the quick release lever and pull back on the derailleur with one hand while removing the wheel with the other.
Second:
To fix a puncture on your mountain bike: Use a tire lever to remove the tire from one side of the rim only, and remove the punctured tube, taking care to keep the tube in place on the inside of the tire. Locate the puncture on the tube and inspect the tire carefully to find and remove the object that caused the puncture. Once the object has been located and removed, the tire should also be carefully inspected for any other objects before reassembling the wheel. Note, however, that not all punctures are caused by objects, and some may be caused by a tire caught between the rim and tire bead.
If you have a spare tube, insert it between the tire and rim, taking care to line up the valve with the valve hole in the rim. If you don’t have a spare tube, use the step-by-step instructions on your puncture repair kit to repair the puncture. Turn the tire back to the wheel rim, being careful not to pinch the tube between the rim and tire, the last part of the tire will need the tire lever to coax it into place, re-inflate your wheel.
Third:
Replacing the rear wheel on a mountain bike: Turn the bike upside down, lift the chain from the top of the middle front chainring, and pull the chain up and back off the frame. Place the wheel in the chain liner frame with the smallest cog sprocket from the bottom of the middle front chainring, position the axle into the frame dropout and tighten the quick release lever. Reconnect the brakes. Whenever you remove and replace a wheel, always make sure the wheel has been safely replaced and the brakes have been tested before riding the bike.
Fourth:
Repair the chain on your mountain bike: Chains break quite often, but this can be avoided by making sure you always shift properly to avoid putting undue stress on the chain. However, if your chain breaks, follow this procedure: Using a chain riveting tool, push the pin out of the damaged link, taking care to leave the end of the pin in the link plate hole, and remove the damaged link from the chain down. Rearrange the links so that the outer plate of the link overlaps the inner plate of the other link. To attach the links, use a chain riveting tool to press the pins back into place and reform the chain.
I will discuss the above four method steps with you today, and I will continue to discuss the remaining content next week.
