About Allen Key
An Allen key, also known as a hex key, is an L-shaped tool used to install and remove fasteners with a hex head. They consist of a piece of material (usually metal) that forms a right angle. Both ends of the Allen key are hex. Therefore, you can use either end to install or remove fasteners, as long as it fits.
How Allen wrench Work
Allen wrenches work like most other screwdrivers and wrenches, but with a few nuances. You can use them by placing one of the ends in a fastener with a hex socket and turning it. Turning the Allen key clockwise will tighten the fastener, while turning it counterclockwise will loosen or remove the fastener.
When examining a traditional Allen key, you may notice that one side is longer than the other. The Allen keys are shaped like letters, with different lengths on the sides. By twisting the long arm, you will generate more torque, making it easier to install or remove other stubborn fasteners. On the other hand, the twist short arm allows you to fit an Allen key in tight spaces.
Advantages of Hex Wrench
Allen wrenches provide a simple and easy solution for installing and removing fasteners with an Allen head. They do not require any power tools nor special drill bits. They are one of the easiest tools available for installing and removing supported fasteners.
An Allen key prevents accidental removal of fasteners. Since they are used with hex fasteners, they will “grab” the fastener better than other common screwdrivers and wrenches. This strong grip prevents the fasteners from peeling off during installation or removal.
Because of their low price, Allen keys are often packaged with consumer-manufactured products. For example, furniture often comes with one or more Allen keys. Using the Allen key, consumers can assemble furniture. Consumers can also use the included Allen key to tighten the parts at a later date.
